Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA)

The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) was passed in 1970 to protect individuals from the unfair and illegal use of consumer credit information. If you use information from a credit report as a basis for making a hiring decision, then you fall under the guidelines of the FCRA.

Consumer Information Sites

In addition to the FCRA, Consumers have many places to go for help to protect their rights. As an employer, tenant screener, or individual checking out someone else, you would be wise to go to these sites and make yourself aware of the actions an individual can take against you if you misuse certain information. You can find helpful information at the following locations:   Federal Trade Commission,    National Association of Consumer Advocates,    National Consumer Law Center.
