There are 2 different type of companies that do background checks:

     1. Those that currently do background checks.

     2. Those that will do background checks in the future.

Why would I make such a statement? Because in my 20+ years as a businessman in the Houston Texas area, I've seen it happen so many times that I have lost count. Companies that are not doing background checks, at least the ones that I have called on to ask for their business, usually call sooner or later. The call goes something like this: "Mr. Mixon, this is xxxxx at xxxxx. We were looking for someone to do background checks and the HR Director asked that I give you a call and ask if you could come by this week and give us a proposal. One of our accounting clerks was arrested by the police department this morning for misuse of company funds. We're not sure how much he took, or how long it has been going on. The auditors just turned up the problem last week..."

Are you company 1 or company 2 ????

In years past, it was not unusual to spend upwards of $200 to do a complete background check. But today, with available technology and affordable databases, that $200 search a few years ago now costs about $50. Limited searches targeting a specific area, such as a county criminal check and a credit report for $20, which most any company could afford.

The most important consideration is to contract with a company that you can trust. One that will actually do the work they say they will do, and one that will get the information back to you in timely fashion. It is always shocking to me when I hear about a company having to wait a week to 10 days for a background check, especially one that we routinely provide for our customers in 24 to 48 hours.
